Back to automated today

August 31, 2007

We had some issues yesterday with live operation, and quite a few dropouts during the day.  I also messed up once and cut the live broadcast off by accident.  Each time, we dropped a substantial number of listeners.  I also noticed that Live365’s limit on simultaneous listeners for a live broadcast was reached a couple of times, meaning some non-VIP folks might have tried to access the station and gotten the “station full” message.  So today we will be back in basic mode, meaning those commercials you’ve come to love will be back at ya every 15 minutes or so.

We’ll probably try live again tonight and tomorrow, but I will wait until the listener numbers are as low as possible, to avoid kicking people off.  That’s what happens when you switch to live…all current listeners are dropped.

So tune back in this weekend for ad-free live broadcasting on SCR…and don’t forget Top Tracks on Sunday morning, when we count down the top rated tracks of the week, by your votes.  The top ten should air during the noon-1 hour, EDT.

Broadcasting Live!

August 28, 2007

Sunshine Classic Rock will be broadcasting live off and on for the next several days and over the weekend.  This is part experiment and part gift to listeners.  It’s an experiment in that we’re not sure whether this will be permanent, depending on our subjective sound quality and reliability judgments and your listenership.  As to the gift part, well, if you’ve listened the last day or so, you’re probably wondering where the commercials went.  Live365 does not insert commercials in live streams!  All you will hear is music and the “reel” interesting station ID’s.  Hope you enjoy!  One problem to note…if it’s necessary to switch out of live and back to automated operation, any listeners at the time will be dropped.  If that happens, just wait a few moments and tune back in.  Comments?  Please leave them below.

Top Tracks

August 26, 2007

Each Sunday morning at 10 EDT we will be running the “Top Tracks” program.  We’ll feature the top-rated tracks according to your votes from our playlist of almost 500 classic rock songs.  This week’s top-rated track was “Come Sail Away” by Styx.  You can vote for your favorite tracks on SCR by clicking the “thumbs up” icon in your Player window.  We’ll play the top 25 rated tracks at least once on the program, and then we’ll have the week’s top ten.  Vote and tune in each Sunday morning to see if your favorite tracks are on the “Top Tracks” playlist!

Tracks added 8/25

August 25, 2007

New artists in the playlist as of this morning:

Black Oak Arkansas, Blind Faith, Bubble Puppy, Elvin Bishop, Little River Band, Poco, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Thunderclap Newman.

Thanks again, Listeners!

August 18, 2007

On the one-month anniversary of Sunshine Classic Rock, we topped the 1000 Total Listening Hours (TLH) mark.  On Friday, you put us over 100 TLH in one day for the first time.  Thanks to everyone for choosing to let us spend part of your day with you!

Van Halen Reunites

August 13, 2007

From today’s St. Petersburg Times music blog:

Are you ready to run with the devil? Or, at the very least, how about a brisk jog?

Those aging rapscallions in Van Halen — guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, vainglorious frontman David Lee Roth plus Eddie’s 16-year-old son, Wolfgang, on bass — announced a 25-date North American reunion tour today.

This will be Eddie and Dave’s first tour together in more than 20 years. They had previously hated each other’s guts.

Unfortunately for eager Floridians, though, we’ll have to travel to hear such classic-rock staples as Panama, Hot for Teacher or Runnin’ With the Devil. No Sunshine State stops are on the schedule at this time, but that could very well change in the next few weeks.

The band, so potent in the ’70s and ’80s, announced the news at a 15-minute press conference Monday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. With the exception of the pubescent Wolfgang, all of the band members are firmly in their 50s. But in typical Roth fashion, he said he’s more than confident in VH’s ability to fight Father Time.

“We think we got it right this time,” said Roth, according to a report by Reuters. “You come and judge the performance harshly, please. I beg you, come on down and see.”

Beefy bassist Michael Anthony is the only holdout from the original lineup, perhaps because he’s good friends with singer Sammy Hagar, who alienated many a VH fan by replacing Roth in 1985. Hagar and Eddie Van Halen had feuded the last few years, leading to the reconciliation with Roth.

No word yet from Wolfgang’s mother Valerie Bertinelli, who is somehow letting her underage son tour the country with one of the most notoriously naughty rock bands of all time. Wow, some kids have all the luck.

Right now, the closest stops to Tampa Bay include the tour opener in Charlotte, N.C. on Sept. 27 and in Greensboro, N.C. on the 29th. But I have a feeling more dates will be added if this trainwreck manages to stay on the rails. If they add a local stop — and there’s a very good chance they will — it will probably happen in mid-November or late December. The bands itinerary has some available dates at those times, plus Florida is a major market for classic rock.

FAIR WARNING: I saw Roth perform solo a few years ago, and it was the concertgoing equivalent of having your gums scraped. He was lackadaisical, bored; he sounded lousy, barely bothering to finish singing the hits. When he did his famous flying-V split off the drum riser, he looked like Wilford Brimley playing hopscotch.

But with guitar whiz Eddie erupting next to him — an Eddie fresh from rehab, no less — maybe Diamond Dave will find some of that ol’ magic. He certainly seems to think so.

“Usually when a band comes back like us it’s rockers with walkers and this is everything but,” said Roth. “Meet us in the future, not the past.”

Playing Favorites Weekend

August 10, 2007

This weekend, something not so different…We have a shorter playlist starting at about 6 pm (EDT) Friday night and continuing through early am Monday. We’ve taken out about one-third of the tracks in the normal playlists. The songs you will hear on Playing Favorites Weekend are the tracks that you the listeners have rated highest. We’ll do this every month or so, with a shorter weekend playlist based on the highest rated songs. Obviously, “Stairway to Heaven” is NOT on the playlist this weekend. :-)

When we get back to normal on Monday, the playlists will expand again, but we plan to replace some of the lower rated tracks with new songs. And I will probably put “Stairway to Heaven” back on. ;-) Until then, enjoy the Playing Favorites Weekend on SCR!

Stairway to Heaven

August 8, 2007

I check the ratings on SCR tracks regularly. Sometimes I’m surprised, sometimes I’m not. Led Zep’s “Stairway to Heaven” is indeed in the top five lowest rated tracks, and that’s no surprise. I’ve heard a lot of comments over the years that it has been played to death, and people are tired of hearing it. Yet to me it is the quintessential classic rock song, and I am hesitant to take it out of the playlists. For one thing, I enjoy listening to it, even if a lot of others don’t. I don’t have any personal Zep music (much of the SCR playlists come courtesy of Live365’s massive music library), so my only chance to hear it is if I happen to be listening when it comes up in the rotation. But mostly I am influenced by the consistency of the song’s high ranking in the top classic rock songs of all time. Look at http://tinyurl.com/2ndezx/ (it’s a deserved #1 IMO), http://q1043.com/pages/top1043_05.html?feed=119261&article=357887 (same) or http://tinyurl.com/yc3ls3 (#4)…so how can you leave such a consistently high-ranked song out of any respectable CR playlist?

On the other hand, tracks from Joe Cocker and Alice Cooper are also in the bottom 10, and when I get around to updating the playlists in the next week or so, those may be gone.

So, what’s the deal with “Stairway to Heaven”? Are you just tired of it, do you think it’s overrated, or ?????

Dial-up or Broadband?

August 6, 2007

I have a DSL internet connection and two other stations here at Live365, both at 56K.  I also have a back-up ISP that I reach by dial-up.  On those occasions when my DSL line is down (seems to happen once or twice a month, usually for a few hours in the early morning, which is when I listen and update my stations), I go dial-up, but I can’t listen to my other stations.  So I thought I would try 32K when setting up Sunshine Classic Rock, so everyone can listen.

For the most part, I’m pleased with the sound, which seems as good as FM to me.  The lower speed also allows me to get more of my music and “reel” interesting station ID’s in the space that Live365 allows me.  On the other hand, there is a noticeable difference in sound quality compared with 56 or 64K speed.

So my question…how many Sunshine Classic Rock listeners would prefer a 56K or 64K sound?  And how many of you are on dial-up and would not be able to hear the better sound?

I’m not planning any immediate changes, but if a few of you would give me some feedback, either by posting here or by e-mail, I’d appreciate it.

Whether you’re into AC/DC or ZZTop, from Sgt. Pepper and the Summer of Love to new wave and jazzy rock, there’s twice the music for everyone from your favorite classic rock artists on the Back2Back weekend.
